Signs of caregiver burnout (and what to do next)

Caring for an aging parent is an act of love, but it can also become overwhelming. Many adult children don’t realize they’re experiencing caregiver burnout until they’re already exhausted, stressed, and struggling to keep up. Recognizing the signs early can help you make better decisions, for both you and your loved one.

Common signs of caregiver burnout

You may be experiencing burnout if you feel:

  • Constantly overwhelmed or anxious
  • Physically exhausted, even after rest
  • Irritable or emotionally drained
  • Guilty for feeling frustrated
  • Unable to keep up with your parent’s needs

Burnout doesn’t mean you’ve failed; it means you’ve been carrying too much, for too long.

The reality: Care needs often increase over time

As your parent ages, their needs may grow to include:

  • Mobility assistance
  • Medication management
  • Memory support
  • 24/7 supervision

At a certain point, it becomes more than one person can safely handle alone.

“I should be able to do this”

Many caregivers struggle with guilt:

  • “I promised I’d never move them.”
  • “They want to stay home.”
  • “I should be able to handle it.”

But the truth is: Getting help is not giving up; it’s making a safer, more sustainable choice.

What you can do next

If you’re feeling burned out, there are supportive steps you can take:

1. Start by talking to someone

You don’t have to carry everything on your own. Connecting with others who understand what you’re going through can make a meaningful difference. At Cogir of Kirkland, our Care Café offers a welcoming space for caregivers to:

  • Share experiences and challenges
  • Learn from others in similar situations
  • Access helpful resources and guidance

Sometimes, simply having a place to talk and feel understood can bring immediate relief.

2. Explore additional support options

As care needs increase, it’s important to consider solutions that provide both safety and consistency.

Assisted living communities can offer:

  • Daily care support
  • Medication management
  • Social engagement
  • A safe, structured environment

For many families, one of the biggest concerns when considering additional support is cost. While senior living is a significant investment, there are a variety of ways families plan for and manage these expenses. Understanding your options can make the decision feel far less overwhelming. 3. Take small steps toward a plan

Even if you’re not ready to make a move, gathering information now can help you feel more in control and prepared for the future, including understanding financial options and available resources.

Attending a Care Café, speaking with a care team, or touring a community are all simple ways to start exploring your options.
